Kratom is most often organised by vein colour — red, green, white, and gold. The name describes the colour of the veins and stem running through the leaf, and by extension when the leaf was harvested and how it was processed. It is a classification system, not a description of any effect. This guide explains what each colour actually refers to, where the categories come from, and how to choose between them.
The plant behind the colours
Kratom is the common name for Mitragyna speciosa, an evergreen tree in the Rubiaceae family — the same botanical family as coffee — native to the humid regions of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. Its leaves contain a range of naturally occurring compounds known as alkaloids, the most studied of which is mitragynine. The alkaloid profile of a leaf shifts as it matures and as it is dried, which is the basis for how kratom is graded and categorised.
What vein colour refers to
Two variables define a vein colour: when the leaf is picked, and how it is dried. As a leaf matures on the tree, the colour of its central vein deepens. Growers harvest at different stages and then cure the leaf in different ways — indoors or outdoors, with or without sun and UV exposure, over shorter or longer drying periods. So “red vein” and “white vein” are, in practical terms, shorthand for harvest timing and processing method. Every colour is the same species; the difference is the leaf and how it was handled, not an additive or a different plant.
Red vein
Red-veined leaves are harvested later in maturity, when the vein has fully darkened, and are typically given the longest drying time, often with a period of sun or UV exposure. Green vein

White vein

Gold vein
Gold vein describes leaf cured to a golden tone, generally through an extended or altered drying process rather than a distinct harvest stage. It is less common than the three primary colours and is sometimes produced by curing white or red leaf for a longer period.

How to choose
Because vein colour is a way of categorising the leaf rather than an instruction, the practical way to choose is by strain and by format.
